Congratulations! You have either bought a house and decided to renovate or repair it, or you made a decision to sell your home for a higher price. Both, a buyer or a seller, may start thinking of hiring a contractor.
There are two types of contractors: those who do everything the right way and those who do not. For example, they may offer lower prices as long as nothing is written down and you pay them in cash. These "under-the-table" deals bring much more risk for you. You should be aware of these risks before you make a hiring decision.
Follow these steps:-Know who you are dealing with -Make sure you are protected from risks -Get it in writing!
Nothing is legal unless it is in writing. So, before signing a contract, review a Sample Renovation Contract developed by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) that provides a detailed review of common elements in a renovation contract.
